A total of 5,178 entries received

The name Youbeni was chosen through a nationwide public naming contest, which received an impressive 5,178 entries.
The winning name, submitted by Mr. Yuji Yano from Kumamoto City, was selected for its beauty and meaning.

The name combines “Yu”, taken from the on’yomi (Chinese reading) of the kanji for Kuma (熊, meaning “bear,” representing Kumamoto), and “Beni”, meaning “crimson”, inspired by the rich red color of strawberries.

The name also evokes the vivid red of strawberry flesh, the soft hues of lipstick and blush, and the joyful, festive color that strawberries bring to holiday tables—especially during Christmas.
